The International Congress on Science and Nordic Skiing (ICSNS) was first time held at the Vuokatti Sports Institut located in the north-east of Finland, from June 18^th – 20^th, 2006. The conference was organized and hosted by the Neuromuscular Research Center, Department of Biology of Physical Activity, University of Jyväskylä, in cooperation with the Vuokatti Sports Institute, Snowpolis Vuokatti, and the Community of Sotkamo. It was also part of the programmes of the World Commission of Sports Science.

The scientific programme offered a broad spectrum of current research work in cross-country skiing, biathlon and ski jumping. In addition to the 7 keynote papers, with some of the most renowned experts in the relevant fields, 28 oral and 15 poster presentations stimulated fruitful discussion. In the proceedings of this congress, selected keynotes, oral and poster presentations are published. The manuscripts were subject to peer review and editorial judgement prior to acceptance.
